While in the US I spent a day at Burning Oak Studio's in Raleigh filming for a DVD about screen printing with System 3 Acrylics. The finished DVD should be on sale in the US very soon. It covers printing on paper, fabric and ceramic transfer. The DVD will be of great help to education and home printmakers with close up filming of screen printing on paper, T shirts and ceramic transfer information. I'll post more information on where to purchase the DVD and the item code etc as soon as I can.

Giggleswick 2011 / Screen Printing for the Enamelling Process

This years summer school was fabulous... all attendees were producing brilliant screen printed decals in the first couple of days. Some enjoyed the mark-making others the computer generated imagery. Elizabeth Turrell had three enamelling kilns in use and it got extremely busy towards the last couple of days. So by the end of the week, as my grandfather used to say, we were 'tired but happy!'

Off to Lisbon on the 18th July to spend some time at CPS, a screen printing studio in central Lisbon for Daler-Rowney. It's my first time in Lisbon so any advise on small, affordable restaurants would be gratefully received...

Back on the 21st July but off the next day to Giggleswick for my summer school, 'Screen Printing for the Enamelling Process'. I'm really excited this year as Elizabeth Turrell is working with me. Elizabeth specialises in all aspects of vitreous enamelling. If anybody is interested we could take one or two more for this years course.

Giggleswick summer school 2011 still has few places available. This year we have Elizabeth Turrell joining us for the first time. Elizabeth is a colleague from UWE and a specialist in vitreous enamelling on steel and copper. She has recently been creating an international contemporary vitreous enamel archive and is involved in a series of public commissions in enamel. Elizabeth exhibits nationally and internationally and in addition has taught widely, both in the UK and overseas.

US visit / Water-based Screen-printing with 'System 3'...

Got back from my US visit on the 24th April... had a fabulous time visiting Montclair University, The Pratt Institute, Parsons and the Chicago Printmaking Collaborative.
Everone I met were so helpfull and all were very keen on 'System 3 Acrylics'. I had a few frightening moments on aircraft as I'm not too keen on flying, tornados in North Carolina and an aborted landing in New York.

The printmaking frateraty and all of the universities and studios I visited were vibrant and had a real creative buzz... can't wait to run some workshops maybe next year!

Just need to catch up on sleep...

I've just had the final itinerary for my US trip in April...

I'm arriving April 12th but flying straight to Phoenix where I'm working for three days at Namta. Sunday 17th visiting MOMA, Monday 18th Montclair University /Talk, Tuesday 19th Pratt Institute /Demo, Wednesday 20th / Parson School of Design / Talk and demo, 21st-22nd North Carolina / not sure where but making a video for education,
Sat 23rd CPC in Chicago / demo and talk... flying home later on the same day!
I'm introducing Daler-Rowney 'System 3 Acrylics' + additives for screen printing.

Portable Exposure Unit/Light Table

The exposure unit is portable and moves easily on it's wheels. The robust construction means that transportation of the unit is worry free. As well as producing high quality screen printing stencils it can also be used for exposing photo etching, litho and flexo plates. screen printing workshops based on his successful model of

Giggleswick Summer School,

Water Based Screen Printing and safe, Ceramic Transfer,

Settle,

North Yorkshire

Monday 26 July - Friday 30 July 2010

Giggleswick is an intense, hands on Summer School, which will

suit teachers and lecturers of the ceramic and printmaking

fraternity. Home printmakers will also benefit from the

experience as we will be using affordable, portable equipment.

This equipment has been designed and built for education and

home studio use. The summer school will be of great help to those
who wish to set up and organise their own screen printing area
using a completely water-based system. Giggleswick is also a solvent
free summer school.

Time will be spent exploring water colour mono printing and
by using fine meshes and sensitive direct stencils, delicate hand

rendered marks will be achieved on paper, fabric and ceramics.

Mark making techniques on textured drawing film are

prominently featured throughout the week and we will be

producing some computer generated imagery using Apple

Macintosh computers and Adobe Photoshop® CS. This will

include monochrome, duo-tone and colour separations output on

affordable laser film. The firing of ceramic pieces using these

images is a feature of the week. White china mugs and tiles are

supplied and last year people also brought their own pieces, i.e.

plates, bowls, teapots...

Giggleswick School is nestled in the Yorkshire Dales, close to Settle
in the North of England, amidst breathtakingly beautiful

countryside. The local pubs in Giggleswick purvey some interesting

ales. Good accommodation and food are included in the price and

arrangements can be made to use the school’s tennis, squash and

fives courts. There is also a swimming pool in Settle. Some evening

walks are usually organised which frequently end up at a local pub.

Last year was a great success and enjoyed by all.

Giggleswick Summer School has become very popular in the UK

Water Based Screenprinting for the Enamelling Process

Led by Elizabeth Turrell and Dave Fortune

This three-day course will help you develop your vitreous enamel work with a focus on the creative application of enamel (waterslide) transfers/decals and direct screen-printing on both steel and copper. The skills you will learn can be applied at both large-scale and small-scale.

This course is suitable for those without previous experience of working in enamel although a practical background working within art and design is recommended.

The course will cover:

Introduction of print techniques for enamel including historical and contemporary examples to inspire you.
Making enamel transfers using both on-glaze and over-glaze ceramic colours.
Direct screen-printing onto a pre-enamelled surface.
Direct screen-printing onto copper with a water-based resist for etching.

During the course you will be given plenty of time to produce samples using the three techniques demonstrated. The application and procedure of firing your finished samples will also be covered. Full technical support will be given throughout the duration of the course.

Participants will be sent a materials list and you should be prepared to bring images or text on the first day which will be transferred onto two sheets of A3 UWET paper for you to take away on the third day.

The facility:

The Centre for Fine Print Research is a centre for excellence in enamel research and professional practice. The Enamel Studio researchers work with artists, craftspeople, designers and industry to solve problems in working with enamel on both copper and steel. The Studio houses a large-scale purpose-built enamel kiln, the largest of its kind in an educational institution in the UK. A sand blaster and small spray booth are also available and staff can provide advice on sourcing specialist materials. The studio and kiln are available for hire by artists wishing to create their own work and undertake large-scale enamel pieces. The kiln can be hired by the day allowing you to fire as many times as practical during the day.

The tutors:

Elizabeth Turrell is the Senior Research Fellow in Enamel at the Centre for Fine Print Research. She runs the enamel research programme and large-scale enamel facility. She is currently creating an international contemporary vitreous enamel archive and is involved in a series of public commissions in enamel. One of her long-term commitments has been to promote and raise the profile of vitreous enamel and to make enamel a more established area of the visual arts by exploring its creative potential on metal. Elizabeth exhibits nationally and internationally and in addition she has taught widely both in the UK and overseas.

Dave Fortune has worked at UWE for many years managing the water-based screen-printing department at The School of Creative Arts in Bristol. He regularly holds workshops, seminars and summer schools in the UK and internationally. In 1989 Dave spent time at the University of Berlin researching water-based screen-printing. On returning to the University of the West of England he proceeded to set up and run a completely solvent free screen-printing area. His involvement in the story of water-based ink development and water-based ceramic decal development at UWE, Bristol was invaluable. His enthusiasm during those early days of the changeover from oil-based to water-based inks, to his present commitment to disseminating the information to schools, colleges and Universities is boundless.

Water-based screen printing has become an increasingly popular medium within education and home printmaking. You can now explore the possibilities of printing on paper, fabrics or even ceramics and enamels in a safe environment. Using affordable, portable equipment sensitive hand rendered and photographic images can be achieved. Some computer generated imagery will also be produced using Photoshop®. La Poule Bottee Print Studio, Languedoc Rousillon, Ceret, France. La Poule Bottee (Chicken in Boots) was set up in 2008 by Jane Henriques, formerly a student of Dave Fortune, with his help. It is Jane’s personal studio, where she continues her own artistic life and is also well equipped to teach and provide facilities for other artists in the area. Since Ceret is a favourite spot for art-lovers, courses are now being organised for students from abroad who wish to combine an enjoyable art experience with a holiday in the Pyrenees. Lists of affordable bed & breakfast and hotel accommodation are available as are details of different ways to reach Ceret. We will be happy to put people in touch with one another if they wish to share a rented car.

Ceret is a lovely little town on the French side of the Pyrenees, 18 miles from the Med and minutes from Spain with cafes and art shops, shady trees and a lot of character, based around narrow streets between the small open squares with parts of the old town walls still standing. The most surprising aspect of the town is the fine 'Museum of Modern Art' with works by Picasso, Chagall, Dufy and Dali. In fact both Matisse and Picasso lived in the town, giving rise to its claim to artistic fame.

The IMPACT International Multidisciplinary Printmaking Conference was held at UWE, School of Creative Arts this year with around 400 attendees from across the world. There were four day's of talks, demonstrations and workshops including water-based screen printing and safe ceramic decal printing run by Dave, which were a great success with plenty of hands-on participation .

Dave and Daler-Rowney, are planning workshops in Australia (The National Art School) and hopefully New Zealand early next year. The visit is to promote non-toxic screen printing using System 3 Acrylics and additives. There is also a lot of interest in water-based ceramic decal printing and other techniques of screen printing surface pattern on clay.
